Description
During Holy Week in 2014 I made several floral arrangements using roses and chamomile flowers. The arrangements were used during the services of Friday, Saturday and Pascha (Easter). This image is a photograph I took at that time (2014) and just this week (2016) digitally "painted" it using computer programs.
Per Wikipedia: Chamomile also known as camomile, is a plant from the genus Anthemis. Its name comes from the Greek word chamaimelon, meaning "ground apple", because of its smell. It has white or yellow flowers, and over 100 species. It can be used as a medicine or as tea. It has been shown to make rodents feel calmer, and helps make people less stressful. It is the national flower of Russia.
Matricaria chamomilla (synonym: Matricaria recutita), commonly known as chamomile (also spelled camomile), Italian camomilla, German chamomile, Hungarian chamomile (kamilla), wild chamomile or scented mayweed, is an annual plant of the composite family Asteraceae. M. chamomilla is the most popular source of the herbal product chamomile, although other species are also used as chamomile.
German chamomile is used in herbal medicine for a sore stomach, irritable bowel syndrome, and as a gentle sleep aid. It is also used as a mild laxative and is anti-inflammatory and bactericidal. It can be taken as an herbal tea, two teaspoons of dried flower per cup of tea, which should be steeped for 10 to 15 minutes while covered to avoid evaporation of the volatile oils. The marc should be pressed because of the formation of a new active principle inside the cells, which can then be released by rupturing the cell walls, though this substance only forms very close to boiling point. For a sore stomach, some recommend taking a cup every morning without food for two to three months. It has been studied as a mouthwash against oral mucositis and may have acaricidal properties against certain mites, such as Psoroptes cuniculi. One of the active ingredients of its essential oil is the terpene bisabolol. Other active ingredients include farnesene, chamazulene, flavonoids (including apigenin, quercetin, patuletin and luteolin) and coumarin.
Dried chamomile has a reputation (among herbalists) for being incorrectly prepared because it is dried at a temperature above the boiling point of the volatile components of the plant.
Per Wikipedia: A rose is a woody perennial of the genus Rosa, within the family Rosaceae. There are over 100 species and thousands of cultivars. They form a group of plants that can be erect shrubs, climbing or trailing with stems that are often armed with sharp prickles. Flowers vary in size and shape and are usually large and showy, in colours ranging from white through yellows and reds. Most species are native to Asia, with smaller numbers native to Europe, North America, and northwest Africa. Species, cultivars and hybrids are all widely grown for their beauty and often are fragrant. Rose plants range in size from compact, miniature roses, to climbers that can reach seven meters in height. Different species hybridize easily, and this has been used in the development of the wide range of garden roses.

Love this flower arrangement...the swirling motion of the rose petals contrasting the hard edged circles of the chamomile make for an exciting pattern ...a dance of energies. Great description too of the plants and uses. Very fine work, Sarah which continues long after 2014 florist duties! F/L+++
