Description
This painting was inspired by the view from a boarding school I attended as a girl. School was on a high hill (or low mountain) overlooking the Rio das Almas (River of Souls) and two towns, Ceres and Rialma, across from each other on the banks of the river. I simplified a great deal and took some liberties with perspective, but the feeling is right. There was no bridge there in those days, but I always thought there ought to have been, so I added one. This was a rural area in the state of Goias in Brazil and there were no paved roads there yet. The red dust was so deep on the roads people traveling any distance in a vehicle would tie scarves over mouth and nose. When it rained, red dust became red torrents running down the hillsides. The red dust also meant spectacular sunsets nearly every afternoon, some more subdued like the one I painted, but many wildly and vividly painted in deep reds, gold, and purple. It was a beautiful place with fields covered in flowers and full of butterflies. Flowering trees (like frangipani) were all over. The only drawback, as I saw it then, was the prevalence of very big tarantulas that would crawl into the dorm through the large spaces between the doors and the concrete floors. No matter how often we were told the really big ones were harmless because their poison was spent, it was just not cool to get ready for bed and find a tarantula the size of a large dinner plate nestled in the sheets.

What a delight, Sarah. This and your story, especially the possibility of tarantulas anywhere.
