Description
This was at the Dealu Monastery in Romania. Note what looks (to American eyes) like a Christmas tree at the front of the procession. A small fir tree is traditionally decorated, carried in procession, and later used to attach wedding gifts. During the first year of marriage, couples in the Muntenia region have their wedding tree attached to the roof of their house. That accounted for the puzzling sight (as we drove through the area in July) of "Christmas" trees on a number of house tops.
Dealu is a 15th-century women's monastery in the Muntenia region of Romania. The monastery church where the wedding took place is dedicated to St. Nicholas-- all the more reason to carry in fir trees. :)
