Description
This beautiful statue is in the Cloisters Museum in New York City. The sculpture is walnut with paint and tin leaf and dated 1150-1200. It is French from Auvergne, possibly from the chapel of Saint-Victor at Montvianeix, near Vichy.
Christian veneration of the Virgin Mary, mother of Christ, is very ancient. Christians see multiple icons (images) in her person. Here, "enthroned", she is herself the throne of Christ. As a simultaneous image of the Church, humanity, and the individual Christian, this kind of depiction is intended to convey the message that we (Church, humanity, Christians) aspire to be earthly thrones for the divine presence. An ancient hymn sung during the Liturgy of St Basil includes the line (addressed to the Virgin Mary) "He made your body into a throne." In effect, any image of Christ seated on his mother's lap, whether she is herself on a throne or not, is an image of Christ enthroned in the Church.
Per Wikipedia: The Cloisters is a museum in Upper Manhattan, New York City specializing in European medieval architecture, sculpture and decorative arts, and is part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Its early collection was built up by the American sculptor, art dealer and collector George Grey Barnard, and acquired by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. in 1925. Rockefeller extended the collection and in 1931 purchased the site at Washington Heights and contracted the design for the Cloisters building.
