Artist's Description
A number of homeless men take shelter in the tunnel from Overlook Terrace leading into the A train subway in upper Manhattan. I had never seen this individual before. After I snapped the photo, it seemed to me he was much too still, so I went over and shook his shoulder and asked if he was alright. He told me "I'm fine, just tired." He had fallen sound asleep as he was peeling an orange and so "froze" into the position I captured.

About Sarah Loft
I see art as not only creation, but also (and maybe primarily) as discovery. For the most part I do collage work and photography, but also enjoy pen and marker drawing, some occasional painting as well as more three dimensional work such as making baskets, dolls, and other objects. As you will see if you wander through my galleries, I have a very wide range of interests. Check out my Artist of the Day feature in Today's Visions.com, curated and written by Mark Myhaver. http://galleries.todaysvisions.com/2014/08/13/todays-featured-artist-sarah-loft/ Some of my artwork appears on products sold at Zazzle. Heartbreaking.... well done Sarah!!! This photo is the epitome of art. You brought up the cruel face of societal inequalities in a very humane manner. As Paul Klee said: “The beautiful, which is perhaps inseparable from art, is not after all tied to the subject, but to the pictorial representation. In this way and in no other does art overcome the ugly without avoiding it.”
Sarah Loft replied:
Thank you, Dimi!

Sarah, I've too, been doing a lot of street photography for the last few months. I see these homeless people, and 'picture' them. Usually I am not in a position to talk to them - most are done while driving by. Sometimes I give some money or just talk, or silently pray.
Sarah Loft replied:
It's hard, but I think they need to be photographed. I do a lot of the silently praying thing too. Thanks for sharing, Joe.
