Description
Information from the German Wikipedia article: The Catholic parish church of St. Emmeran in Mainz was founded in the 8th century and mentioned by name for the first time in 1220. Significant modifications of the Church took place in the 13th and during the 14th and 15th centuries. In the second world war, the Church was heavily damaged, but rebuilt in the 1960s and 1970s.
The dedication to St Emmeran (d 625) is a rare one. This fact, as well as archaeological findings hint at the foundation of a church in the 9th century. This was a time when very many churches and monasteries were founded in Carolingian Mainz. The Church was built on the main Roman road (dating to the first century) which connected the camp on the Kästrich with the Rhine bridge. Today this is Emmeransstraße.
Of the pre-Romanesque buildings nothing remains above ground. The Romanesque main tower of the Church, built in the 12th century, still survives. In the 14th century the former church building was replaced with a Gothic building while retaining the Romanesque tower. More minor renovations and additions were made in the centuries that followed. A larger renovation of the building occurred in 1762.

What a wonderful minimalist photo this is Sarah! I love the almost abstract feel that it gives!
