Description
This is the figure of Gabriel in stained glass, part of an Annunciation depiction, which is now in the Early Gothic Hall of the Cloisters Museum in New York City. It was originally from Altenberg-an-der-Lahn, Hesse, Germany, and is dated 1290-1300.
Colored glass has been popular for centuries for use in windows and household items such as drinking glasses. The earliest forms of colored glass were caused by impurities in the sand used to produce the glass. Later, colors were introduced deliberately into glass by addition of minerals or metals during the production process.
Per Wikpedia: Gabriel is mentioned in both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. In the Old Testament, he appears to the prophet Daniel, explaining Daniel's visions (Daniel 8:15–26, 9:21–27). In the Gospel of Luke, Gabriel appeared to Zechariah and the Virgin Mary, foretelling the births of John the Baptist and Jesus, respectively (Luke 1:11–38). In the Book of Daniel, he is referred to as "the man Gabriel", while in the Gospel of Luke, Gabriel is referred to as "an angel of the Lord" (Luke 1:11).
Gabriel is not called an archangel in the Bible, but is so called in Intertestamental period sources like the Book of Enoch. In the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Anglican churches, the archangels Michael, Raphael, and Gabriel are also referred to as saints.
Per Wikipedia: The Cloisters is a museum in Upper Manhattan, New York City specializing in European medieval architecture, sculpture and decorative arts, and is part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Its early collection was built up by the American sculptor, art dealer and collector George Grey Barnard, and acquired by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. in 1925. Rockefeller extended the collection and in 1931 purchased the site at Washington Heights and contracted the design for the Cloisters building.
